Anyone can hang out a shingle and profess to be an inspector
Currently, there are no Federal or Provincial regulations governing qualifications and
accreditation of Inspectors nor standard for the Inspection or the Inspection Report
The purchaser's protection is directly proportional to the Inspector's
experience, credentials, thoroughness and independence

CRASH COURSE HOME INSPECTORS
There is a growing number of private institutes and 'schools' cranking out 'Home Inspectors'.
Most offer two week 'crash courses' with subsequent refresher and update course/seminars. Correspondence courses are also flourishing.

HOME INSPECTOR ASSOCIATIONS

There are numerous Societies of Home Inspectors. The two main ones are:
    ASHI    The American Society of Home Inspectors
    CAHI    The Canadian Society of Home Inspectors
These Societies have standards of practice and codes of ethics but like the National Building
Code of Canada, the standards set are minimum standards.

PUBLIC UNAWARE OF WHO REALLY CONTROLS THE INSPECTION INDUSTRY
Realtors and Real Estate Agents, in effect ,control the majority of Referrals to Inspectors .
Agents are typically the point of first contact for most first time buyers and those new in town.
In an effort to assist Purchasers and ensure transactions go smoothly, Agents typically
try to have answers for any questions and concerns that pop up. For example: the names of Lawyers,
Surveyors, Carpenters, Painters.....where to take water samples for testing.....and so on.

Unfortunately, AGENTS HAVE A CONFLICT OF INTEREST when answering questions
concerning Inspectors, referring Inspectors, giving out Inspector flyers, pamphlets and business cards.
